Today, it is almost impossible to talk about security systems without also talking about computer networks, mobile applications, cloud services and digital communications. More than three decades ago, the picture was completely different.
Alarm systems were largely closed worlds. Their task was to detect an event, activate a siren and, in more advanced systems, send information to a remote monitoring centre. Communication options were limited, video surveillance was analogue, and the idea that a user could check the status of a property from another city bordered on science fiction.
That is why long experience in this industry is not simply a matter of how many systems have been installed. It helps us understand why certain technologies evolved in the way they did. We have seen solutions arrive with great promises and disappear quickly, as well as technologies that initially looked like interesting novelties and became industry standards only a few years later.
Technology is useful only when it solves a real problem.
Experience creates a healthy degree of caution. When a new technology appears, our first question is what it genuinely brings to the user. Does it solve a problem better than the existing solution? Does it improve reliability? Does it make operation simpler? Does it enable something that was not possible before?
If the answer is yes, it deserves serious attention. For us, staying “one step ahead” has never meant chasing every novelty. It means understanding where the industry is heading early enough to distinguish a temporary trend from a change that will truly last.
Today that cycle is accelerating further. Cloud services, mobile communications, artificial intelligence and the growing integration of different systems are changing security technology at great speed. Alarms are no longer isolated devices; they are becoming part of the wider digital infrastructure of a building, while the boundary between security, automation and communications is becoming less distinct.
Yet the fundamental question remains the same as it was in 1989: what is this technology for, and can we trust it when we need it? That question connects every generation of systems we have worked with over the years.
